Meet Irania Patterson
Irania's Short Bio
Irania is an award-winning author, well known master storyteller, and artist-educator, who has been performing for audiences of all ages for more than 26 years. She has been featured at numerous cultural centers, schools, libraries, theaters and other venues in the US and around the world. She has worked in the field of outreach programming, arts integration and inclusion in education for libraries and schools.
Irania’s bilingual children’s picture book Chipi Chipis, Small Shells of the Sea/Chipi Chipi Caracolitos del Mar (CPCC Press) was an International Reading Association Children’s Choice Award for 2006. She is the author of Wings and Dreams: The Legend of Angel Falls (Novello Press 2010), The Boy in the Hammack/El Niño en la Hamaca , 2024. In 2013, she co-wrote with Dr Beth Murray, Mama Goose, a bilingual children play recognized in The World Congress of Drama in Education, IDEA, Paris, and Beijing 2024. Tatas Tales (2022), a play that features the writing of women with breast cancer. She is also one of the cowriters of the book 27 Views of Charlotte (Eno Publishing, September 2014).


She is a Certified Applied Biblio/Poetry Therapy Facilitator and has provided Bibliotherapy programs since 2013.
She was the Chair of Diversity for the National Association of Poetry Therapy in the US and the Vice-president of REFORMA in the Carolinas. (REFORMA The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish Speaking).
Irania holds a Master of Literature from La Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona, Spain, and Teaching Artist Certifications from Wolf Trap and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She has written several publications for librarians and educators in the subjects of creative outreach strategies to reach marginalized communities.
As an ardent supporter of schools, libraries, and cultural organizations, Irania has spoken in many arts, education and humanities organizations promoting intercultural exchanges for social transformation. A seasoned storyteller in the US and Latin America, Irania has told stories to hundreds of children and families over her 28-year career.
