In this video we will show you how to use one of our newest original songs “With my Little Finger” to introduce body parts in Spanish using this fun tune!

Target Words:

- With my little finger I say “yes”: Con mi dedito digo “sí”

- With my little finger I say “no”: Con mi dedito digo “no”

- With my head I say “yes”: Con mi cabeza digo “sí”

- With my head I say “no”: Con mi cabeza digo “no”

- With my elbow I say “yes”: Con mi codo digo “sí”

- With my elbow I say “no”: Con mi codo digo “no”

Recommendation – Extended Activities

You can also replace the words “little finger” or “cabeza” or “codo” with other body parts (Leg = Pierna; Foot = Pie; Nose = Nariz). For example: ”Con mi pierna digo sí sí” – “With my leg I say yes, yes”

As an artist, I believe that if I am able to impact positively at least one person of my audience every time I perform, then my job is done.

Last week, I had the opportunity to visit Providence Day School with Criss Cross Mangosauce to do several bilingual performances. It was a great experience overall, we did a couple of duo performances with the little ones in the morning and then we offered a concert with our group of eight musicians for the older kids.

We had a lot fun (as always) and the kids seemed to enjoy themselves as well. We talked about the countries we are from, sang some of our new bilingual songs and played some traditional Latin American games. We even had a chance to share the stage with Jay Barron, a great musician and Spanish teacher at Providence Day who sang three of his very own bilingual songs as part of the show. We were all impressed with how many Spanish words the students already knew, and the teachers thought the performances were a great way for them to be able to practice the vocabulary they knew through this inter-cultural experience.

Although, as I said before, the whole experience was very positive, I must admit I was mostly energized by one special interaction I had at the end of one of our performances. I met a little girl from Colombia who moved to the United States one month ago. “I am from Colombia” she said speaking Spanish to me the entire time “my parents said we moved here because we will all have more opportunities” and then she gave a big “abrazo de oso” (a bear hug)… I hugged her back and told her that her parents were correct, that she will have wonderful opportunities here and that was my pleasure to meet her.

Seeing her beautiful brown eyes lighting up with our presence, our music and our stories, is a wonderful gift I kept from that great day we spent at Providence Day School.

By: Irania Patterson

Each year, Americans observe National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15, by celebrating the stories, cultures and contributions of Americans whose ancestors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and it was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988 (Public Law 100-402).

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of the independence of several Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, falls in this 30 day period.

This is a time to remember and learn about the many Latinos who have made a great and positive impact the US.

As parents we should teach our children about how Latino scientist, artists, writers, teachers, doctors, politicians, entrepreneurs, sport stars and many others have become examples to our children. In this way they can also be inspired by their work and legacy.

But not only the famous Latinos have to be remember, we can also share with our children their own family history as a way to reconnect and feel proud of their own heritage. For that, I recommend, finding old family photo albums and talking about your own family. Ask questions like:

- Who do you think you look like?

- Who is the tallest in the family?

- Who do you think is the funniest person?

- Do you know your grandparents last names?

- Do you know how did they met?

- Why do you think this relative has red or black hair?

- Share with your children a song, a tale, a joke that brings back memories and feelings to you

Criss Cross Mangosauce is a concept created by a team of two Latina moms, performing artists and educators passionate about fostering children’s love for languages, cultures and arts. Inspired by their own experiences raising bilingual children and working with bilingual audiences for many years, they want to share Hispanic heritage and Spanish language in a fun and educational way.
